ACORN BLOOD PACK
In May 2019 our Acorn Blood Project was awarded funding from Horizon 2020, the biggest EU Research and Innovation program ever.
H2020 provides research and innovation funding for multi-national collaboration projects. It promises more breakthrough discoveries and world-firsts, by taking great ideas from proof of concept to the market.
One of these breakthroughs is the ACORN Blood Pack.
PROBLEM
Blood transfusion saves lives and improves health, but many patients do not have timely access to safe blood.
Currently, all commercially available blood bags are manufactured using Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and a plasticizer called
Di (2-ethylyhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP). DEHP is classified as a reproductive toxin and is listed in the Reach candidate list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). DEHP-PVC bags are affecting our environment and our health adversely.
SOLUTION
Through this project Ducit Medical Ireland, along with our development partners Global Polymer Consulting Ireland, Haemotronic SPA Italy & Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service Scotland, are developing a complete blood pack system ‘ACORN-BP’. Our ACORN BP is PVC and DEHP free, therefore reducing the threat posed by DEHP to people and the environment, with no detrimental effect on the storage of red blood cells, which will be up to 42 days storage stability, in-line with European Council guidelines.
IMPACT
Once developed and accredited, ACORN-BP will be commercialised as a direct replacement of PVC-DEHP bags, a real game-changer in the provision of healthcare solutions, delivering improved patient care & healthcare efficiency while respecting the environment.
